As a therapist, I believe that part of my role is to connect others with resources and services to help them lead happier, more fulfilling lives. Below are some links to organizations and services you may find helpful. If you’re experiencing an emergency, do not wait for a therapist or counseling center to respond to your inquiry; instead, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

LOWER-COST TREATMENT

Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy - Psychotherapy Center for Gender & Sexuality (PCGS): PCGS (formerly known as GLAP) provides affirmative psychotherapy treatment services to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (LGBTQ) individuals. 212-333-3444 x 109

Manhattan Alternative: Kink, Poly, Trans & LGBQ Affirmative Providers. They offer a limited number of sliding-scale appointments.

The Columbia Doctors Nurse Practitioner Group offers an inclusive and welcoming experience for all patients, including those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT), and provides comprehensive LGBT care services (646) 766-0874 for adults, adolescents, and children.

The Institute for Human Identity offers video and in-person sessions and has been providing LGBTQ+ affirmative therapy for over 40 years.

The William Alanson White Institute established its award-winning, low-cost treatment center in 1948 to provide affordable psychoanalysis and psychotherapy to members of the community.

NYC Affirmative Psychotherapy is a community-focused, sustainable sliding-scale mental health practice in Manhattan providing treatment to individual adults ages 18+.

The Karen Horney Clinic in Manhattan “provides therapeutic services for people with a wide range of emotional and mental health concerns, including depression, anxiety, psychosomatic disorders, phobias, sleep disturbance, obsessive-compulsive disorder, family problems, stage of life issues, post-traumatic stress.” They work with adults, adolescents, and children.

The LGBT Center (Manhattan) offers advocacy, counseling, health and wellness programs; arts, entertainment, and cultural events; recovery, parenthood, and family support services. ADOLESCENTS

Mt. Sinai Adolescent Health Center: New York City-based program that delivers comprehensive, integrated medical and mental health services and prevention education to young people aged 10 to 22.

NYU Langone Transgender Youth Health Program: Pediatric endocrinologists, adolescent medicine specialists, psychologists, and social workers are specially qualified to provide gender-affirming care for children and adolescents. This includes puberty suppression, hormone therapy, and social and emotional support.

Ackerman Institute- Gender & Family Project: Mental health services for children and families, support groups for parents and caregivers of transgender youth, research, training for professionals.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project provides education and Legal Services and their website provides paperwork for legal name changes in NY State.

LEGAL RESOURCES

The New York City Bar Justice Center’s Legal Hotline offers legal information, advice and referrals to low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford a private attorney or do not have access to legal representation. The Hotline can assist you with civil legal issues, including matrimonial and family law, housing law, domestic violence, bankruptcy, and debt collection and benefits. The Legal Hotline is available Monday - Thursday from 9:00AM to 5:00PM and on Friday from 9:00AM to 1:00PM at 212-626-7383, or you can apply online for assistance by filling out the online intake application.

New York Legal Assistance Group's LGBTQ Law Project. The fellowship will provide legal services to LGBTQ youth and young adults through age 26 - for example, help with issues such as name changes, education discrimination, public benefits, and immigration. It also entails working with youth-serving organizations to develop Know Your Rights and legal literacy tools for young people.

Monday Night Law provides free 30-minute consultations with volunteer lawyers in the following areas: bankruptcy, consumer law, family law, employment law, landlord-tenant, and small business matters. To schedule an appointment, please call 212-626-7373 (Español 212-626-7374), so that an attorney referral counselor can figure out if a Monday Night Law appointment would work well for you. Please bear in mind that the volunteer lawyers only provide basic legal advice on the areas of law listed above and will not represent you. The consultation is a chance for you to discuss questions you may have about your legal issue.

LawHelpNY.org provides legal information for New Yorkers who cannot afford a lawyer. LawHelpNY lists more than 600 free legal service projects and organizations with their contact and intake information, and over 4,000 Know Your Rights and self-help resources covering 16 areas of law. LawHelpNY.org is also available in Spanish.

The City Bar Justice Center (CBJC) provides free legal services to low-income New Yorkers through a variety of projects. CBJC also strives to give the self-represented the support they need to successfully protect their legal rights.
